The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for school candidates. The results were announced at a briefing on Monday by Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC. A notification of the results being released was also posted around 11:23 a.m. on WAEC’s official Twitter page.
Dangut stated, “A total of 1,814,736 candidates registered for the examination from 25,126 recognized secondary schools across the country.

“Out of these, 1,685,889 candidates, or 93.39%, have had their results fully processed and released. However, 119,327 candidates, representing 6.61%, still have one or more subjects pending due to unresolved issues.”

He further noted that efforts are underway to expedite the processing and release of the results for the affected candidates within a few days.

The examination is also administered to candidates from schools in Benin Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, and Equatorial Guinea, where the Nigerian curriculum for Senior Secondary Schools is utilized.

Performance Analysis

According to Dr. Dangut, “The analysis of candidates’ performance in the examination reveals that out of the 1,805,216 candidates who sat for the exam, 1,332,089 candidates, or 73.79%, achieved credit or above in a minimum of five subjects (with or without English Language and/or Mathematics).

“Additionally, 1,301,941 candidates, representing 72.12%, obtained credits and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

“Of these, 628,820, or 48.30%, were male candidates, while 673,121, or 51.70%, were female candidates.”

A review of the percentage of candidates achieving credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, between WASSCE for School 2023 and 2024 shows a 7.69% decrease in performance this year. In the 2024 WASSCE, the percentage of candidates who met this criterion is 72.12%, compared to 79.81% in 2023.

Seized Results

Meanwhile, the WAEC boss highlighted that the results of 215,267 candidates, representing 11.92% of all candidates who sat for the exam, will be withheld due to examination malpractice.

He added that results for candidates sponsored by states with outstanding debts to the Council will also be withheld until the debts are settled.

Dr. Dangut stated, “The results of 215,267 candidates, or 11.92% of the total number of candidates, are being withheld due to various reported cases of examination malpractice. This represents a 4.37% decrease from the 16.29% recorded in the WASSCE for School Candidates 2023. Additionally, results for candidates sponsored by states with outstanding payments will not be released until the debts are cleared.

“We urge those concerned to settle their dues to allow the affected schools and candidates to access their results.”

Results will be released within 12 hours of a request, and certificates will be issued after 48 hours. Dr. Dangut also assured candidates of near-immediate release of their results and certificates, provided they meet the statutory requirements.

“Please note that the WASSCE for School Candidates 2024 results are currently being uploaded to the results website.”
“Candidates should check their results online and then apply for their digital certificate, which will be issued 48 hours later.

“Candidates who have met their financial obligations to the Council can access their results on the Council’s results website: www.waecdirect.org, within the next twelve hours.

“Copies of the Result Listing will be sent to schools shortly.”
